The World Cup is just around the corner, and with each passing day, more people appear to be talking about what’s to come, especially on social media. And, as everyone knows, it’s memes that reign supreme on platforms such as Twitter, and there are plenty to get people started on the road to Qatar.

While there will be many similarities as we head towards the Qatar World Cup 2022 between this run of the tournament and ones that have gone before, such as Russia 2018. But, there will also be tons of differences, such as this World Cup taking place at the end of the year rather than the off-season for most of Europe’s top leagues, because of the weather conditions in Qatar. However, one similarity you can be sure of, and perhaps expect to see more this time round, are internet memes.

So, what are memes? Memes generally use an image, piece of text, or in some cases, a short video clip, and they naturally are humorous, there to poke fun at an individual or group of persons. Or they could even be used to be thought-provoking. And, because football is huge, especially on Twitter, where memes are a big deal, the World Cup and the run-up to Qatar are expected to be meme central. But, while it may all seem to be fun and games, there is an element of skill involved in some cases.

You see, while normal, everyday social media users often design and share memes, commenting on them as they go. There are also instances where memes can be cleverly used as a marketing tool. And while the World Cup doesn’t necessarily need marketing because it’s the biggest sporting event on the planet. You could say that every little helps in terms of a marketing push. And if memes are involved, it’s going to be a more modern approach, with more people likely to buy into it. So, keep an eye out for those World Cup memes as Qatar 2022 draws ever closer.

Of course, this meme, relating to the timing of the World Cup, is one of the most popular around. World Cups have always happened during the summer months for European countries. And it usually means weeks long of partying throughout nations. But, because the World Cup is in Qatar, it is happening at the end of the year.
