Mid-night is technically the halfway point between sunset and sunrise. If the sun sets at 9:00 pm and rises at 6:20 am, then the halfway point is 1:40 am; that would be true mid-night. Mid-night only became 12:00 am because Hollywood thought it sounded better and added more drama for it to occur as the bell tolled twelve times.
