#4 When someone says "first woman to do a thing" all I hear is "lots of people have already done this, but now some woman has." Whoop dee doo.

Adrienne,

No, the point is: the first woman who was allowed to do this. The one who proved all those wrong, who said "a woman can't achieve this and therefore we don't allow it". And that's awesome.

Ray,
I think the truth lies somewhere between you and Adrienne. I get tired of hearing about the first left-handed whosamawhatsits from Tuskamaloosa who has done whatever. It does however mark how far we have come that this is boring.

Hal, I think it feels that way to men. Believe it or not, to women there's still a feeling of "I can't do blank, I'm just a woman" that lingers over us. We constantly fight it and push it away, but it's the reason things like "the first woman to" matter. It helps us fight the inner voice. I believe the same is likely true for any other oppressed group. So these posts matter to us.

Ray,

I think what they're saying is that, like me, they don't give a sh#t about any of what you said. Like, absolutely none of it at all.
