Neil Young did cocaine backstage before he performed at The Band’s Farewell Concert in San Francisco in 1976. Young had visible cocaine residue hanging from his nostril as he performed.
The concert was being filmed by Martin Scorsese for a documentary called The Last Waltz. Young’s manager wanted Scorsese to edit out the unmissable drugs beneath Young’s nose.
To do this, Scorsese created “the traveling booger matte” – an effect that hovered over Young’s nose throughout his performance.
