#16 Full service used to be common at all shoe stores, and that service included taking off the shoes the customer was wearing, measuring their feet, and helping them put on the shoes they wanted to buy.

In case you missed it, this was a CLOTHING store, not a show store. He or she would no more take off and put on a customers shoes than the would undress and dress that same customer.

The practice Ezra is describing was quite common back in the day. Not only in shoe stores, but in shoe departments of department stores.

This used to be common practice. If someone stole your credit card, showing an I.D. made it difficult for the thief to use said credit card. You'll also notice the person ended up paying in cash...

All banks use to require proof of signature on the back of the credit card, and stores began asking for ID to compare the signatures. Currently most card companies deal with the fraud for stores, so they no longer have to do this.
