The Balrog, for example, was only described as a menacing creature shrouded in fire, darkness and shadow. That's it. Some characters, like Tom Bombadil and Gandalf were described in a little more detail, and to that effect, #1 is so far off as to be offensive. Really, all of these are terrible.
