Maybe it will take 7 years because they're planning to do it like my home town. Have the town manager and a few very loud citizens push through the plan despite a large number of other citizens questioning both the need and safety of the proposed design. Then after the construction is nearly complete finally realize that what had been stated multiple times was true and emergency vehicles wouldn't be able to pass is there was traffic going both directions (on the busiest section of the busiest road in town) since the curb to protect the bike lane prevents cars from pulling over. They're now in the process of ripping the curbing out and repaving (again...) dash

Carol, They have built separate bike paths in nearly every community around me, and cyclists STILL use the road. These are the same people who, when driving their oversized SUVs, don't yield to traffic when there is a cyclist on their side of the road. I would take every opportunity to drive within the chalked path and pick off as many of these cyclists as possible until the do the construction. @$$holes.

Carol,
Better yet, license bicycles and bicyclists. Require bicycle insurance. Mandate annual usage fees. Institute new and used bicycle sales taxes, and special-use bicycle accessory and equipment taxes. Administer annual bicycle safety inspections.
Then take all the tax monies collected to build bicyclists their own little bicycle world separate from the cars they hate so much.
