How do they know about the watch in a dream? Even if someone remembers that happening in a dream once, does it happen consistently? Who remembers their dreams well enough to know?
It's like when people say that if you die in a dream, you'll die in real life. How do you know? Do you remember dying in a dream and then waking up dead?

Yea, you actually do and it's happened to me. Even worse is digital watches/clocks they look like numbers but you can't really make them out.
You can train your self to be present and aware in a dream, or lucid dreaming and looking at your watch/clock regularly is one way to do that and control what happens within your dream.
Although I've died plenty of times in dreams, that's a myth.
