wish millenial parents would still do this. they think it's a need to have a smartphone but cant pay the utilities.

It's getting to the point where you need to have a smartphone just to take care of necessary business. True, it doesn't need to cost $1000+, but you either have to have a laptop, desktop, or tablet or a smartphone, even if it's a $150 Android model.

I bought my smartphone for $20. I use a free texting app with 60 mins of calling a month more if I watch adds or do small tasks.
Don't assume people are paying a lot for a smartphone.
And, yes you DO need a smartphone. No one would have ever complained about a parent in the 80s 90s having a home phone?
Without a smartphone how do you expect them to get calls from school if their kids are sick, apply to a better paying job, save money on their utilities by signing up for paperless billing, or just use the phone itself to make money.
A smartphone is no longer a luxury but a necessity. Especially if you can't afford a computer.
Everything is done online now and if you don't have a smartphone at minimum you're at a severe handicap.
You don't have to buy the newest iPhone or Galaxy, but a cheap android is a minimum.

For me it was a weird opposite sort of thing. One of my best (childhood) friends went to school early to have breakfast. I was jealous of the little plastic things of cereal they gave him. I thought they were neat because you didn't need a bowl, you could just pour the milk right in. I found out later that it was because his family was indigent and he couldn't get breakfast at home.
Come to think of it, he was our Kenny. Believe it or not, his last name was McCormick.

Use it to flush the toilet. Not me but cousins were on a well water and during the winter the well froze up sum and they had to ration water for weeks at a time.

Toilet paper... divorced mom would run out of money too fast and stopped hyong toilet paper for several years... had to steal some from school if I wanted to wipe at home. Otherwise it was old magazines and newspapers

#25 Same for me. Dad would cook a big pot of stew or chili and we'd eat that all week with saltines. Sundays though he would cook a big breakfast.
Never any name brand food or clothing, only a few new outfits per year. One pair of shoes and two pairs of jeans. You better not ruin them either.
