In one of the first shots of The Polar Express, we see a newspaper with the name of a mall: “Lone Pine Mall.” If you think you’ve seen this name before, you’re right. It was the name of the mall in the 1985 film Back to the Future.
Viewers even have an explanation for this coincidence: The Polar Express is set in 1956, on Christmas, and Back to the Future — in 1955. So, the character of both movies lived at the same time, and would have been able to visit the same mall.
