If you take the (considerable) trouble to master their language, and assimilate their customs and etc, the distance you feel between yourself and the J natives decreases considerably. It may never completely disappear, depending on circumstances, but.
OTOH very few Americans, at least, go to the trouble.
America is not perfect, but it's the closest any government has come to individual freedom and providing the ability to better your lot in life through hard work. The haters and tyrants have made headway in their efforts to deconstruct the US, but its citizens will win in the end.
I very much liked the extremely low levels of crime in Japan. For example, I don't think I've ever seen a bicycle locked up there. The rituals and superstitions get a little old to me, but never having to worry much about being robbed or burgled is an amazing feeling.
#8 Having lived in both countries, I can attest to this
#12 Yes, well, they kinda do what they want with the holiday. "Christmas Cake" and so on. Still, I've never before seen a "Godzilla Claus"
#37 Well, this is just silly.
#39 Other areas have created similar passages for raccoons, groundhogs, etc. OTOH the Japanese are hardly alone in this. Similar things are being built in the western U.S. and in Europe.

sadly true they are nice and friendly as long as you only come for a visit. A cousin of mine learned that the hard way.

Japan is very reserved, conservative, and family oriented.
There’s a clue why the US is now in the state it’s in
Japan is very homogeneous. Diversity is not a strength - unity is strength. Diverse ethnicities are fine as long as they have a united culture.
When the US abandoned the 'melting pot' unity and started the diversity/grievance movement, the decline began.
They refuse to accept that particular emperor has no clothes - the indoctrination is working.
