The giant cyclops legend spawned from elephant/mammoth skulls, which have a large opening at the top that looks like an eye socket (it's actually the nasal cavity.) Similarly, dragon myths all derived from the discovery of dinosaur bones, which also explains why dragon myths exist all over the world.
