#7 From what I know, most people drank beer back then. A lot of people made their own and it was only about 1% alcohol and considered safer than drinking water, which was full of bacteria and such.

If the pilgrims did not load enough barrels of beer on the Mayflower before crossing the Atlantic for the New World and ran out, they would have likely landed the first chance that they got to try to make more. it just happened to be Plymouth, I guess.
