#16 I've done both of those for 50+ years in downtown (city centre) Ottawa and Toronto with never a single incident. Crime isn't as prevalent as people's fears.

#16 Okay, I didn't leave keys in the ignition but rarely locked it. Nothing to steal in the car and no broken windows. Nobody wants an older Mazda anyway.

Yvonne,

This. Most cities in western world (maybe except in America, don't know) are much safer than you would think.

#15 My in-laws have a small farm with a well. They have an electric pump, but also have a hand-pump near the front door that, with minimal effort, draws up some of the best tasting water.

"The little wave you give when passing a vehicle going the opposite direction on a country road. Bonus points if you’re cool enough to just raise your first two fingers off the steering wheel.

Also, saying hello to a stranger on a hiking trail, or at least giving a little nod and smile. I can always tell someone isn’t from here when I say “hello” on a hike and they look at me like I’m an alien."
