I would guess it's one of those small hand weights some people use for working out ...sort of a barbell .

Dea, Comes from German. In English - particularly in Scottish dialects - it's related to 'handful'. It has come to mean 'dumbbell' in German (maybe Scottish, too, but I don't know for sure. I had not heard this word before, so I had to look it up.
