Joanna, The postal service can trace letters and packages from start to finish. I knew someone who was a victim of an ongoing mail crime. The post office traced it, eliminating one stop after another, starting with the sender. Turns out it the thief was in the last point they had to check: her address. The thief was her room mate. It made for a tricky arrest, to put it mildly.
