Actually, Edison Light Co was convinced that hid lights had to use Direct Current electricity. Many things caught fir because DC is not useful if it has to be transmitted far. Nikola Tesla's Alternating Current was the solution to this major problem. AC electricity can be transmitted hundreds of miles. And of course Tesla's lights were fluorescent. So, yet another example of rich people just making up shit to make money.
