"Mary Shelley, best known as the author of Frankenstein, kept a macabre memento after her husband, poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, passed away in 1822. Percy lost his life in a sailing accident, and when his body was cremated, his heart did not fully burn, possibly due to calcification from an earlier illness. Mary kept the preserved heart wrapped in his own poetry and stored it in her writing desk for the rest of her life. The heart was eventually buried alongside Mary’s son, Percy Florence, after her passing in 1851.
