The classic "chicken or egg" dilemma asks, "Which came first?" It's based on the fact that chickens hatch from eggs, but those eggs are laid by chickens. This metaphor is used to describe situations where it’s tough to figure out which event caused the other. Plutarch even posed this question in the 1st century CE!
