#4 Today, the "Lefty Whopper" would come with a bottle of green hair dye, a huge nose ring and a smug, undeserved sense of personal accomplishment.

yeah, but that's 48hrs non stop if he drove 8h a day @ 5mph so 40 miles a day / 240 miles = 6 days . think it may be a bit of a typo

To spread it out evenly over 6 weeks (42 days), the guy would only have to drive 1 hour per day at 5mph to cover the 240 miles:
5 miles/day x 42 days = 240 miles.

However it turns out the guy, Alvin Boone Straight, ran in to all kinds of trouble with his tractor over the course of his trip and it did in fact take him ~6 weeks to get to his brother's place according to Wikipedia.

#3 I like that one. Not my circus. Not my monkey.

#20 I honestly don't know if the film is better or worse for the fact that we could not hear Forrest say those lines.

#33 This is the type of person I want as a neighbor. One that thinks of the whole instead of just about themselves.

#9 If there are power poles around, are you really lost?
Why not simply follow the power poles until you reach civilization?

#26 'Hobo' is short for 'Hoe Boy'. They were known as men who carried their farming tools with them looking for work: rakes, shovels, etc. But mostly hoes because they're versatile. Therefore, hobos. ...I know all the 12yo boys are snickering to themselves right now, but there you go.

Also noteworthy: at that time, men would call other men 'boy' as often as they called a woman 'girl'. It was not about condescension.

#44 Pet ownership: a humanoid relationship with another species, often superseding human relationships. This is a sickness.
