"We chose this building because we were allowed to garden there. Have been here for 10 years. I am chronically ill and unable to work so we are low income. I have $25/month to spend on myself and for the past 8 years have spent most of it on plants.4 days ago we got a notice on our doors that the owner has decided he wants a more uniform look, and will be replacing everything with grass and gravel. I just wanted to share my garden with someone before it is gone."

The US seem to be a hell hole in that matter. Thankfully I live in a country where most of the above would be illegal.

In many places, you can send your landlord notice of what needs to be fixed, and give a reasonable time for them to do so. If they do not, you can call someone to repair it, and deduct that bill from your rent. Just notifying them of this tends to get them to fix it quick.
