#5 - Wrong! Welch /saved/ GE. If they had continued on the path they were on prior to him assuming the helm, they would have been out of business completely. You can hate on him all you want for the mass firings, but the strategy was sound - if they weren't #1 or #2 in a market, Welch got them out. It drastically cut operating expenses and returned the company to profitability for the first time in decades.

The Bayer AG decided to buy Monsanto when it was already clear Monsanto would get sued a lot in the US. Now, 9 years later, Bayer itself is worth half the amount they've paid for Monsanto.

Missing from this list: Businesses that only accept cash. Even the majority of vendors at farm markets, fairs, art and craft shows, etc. are capable of taking cards. The typical excuse I hear from places that only accept cash is that card transaction fees are too high. Well, it's better than making no money at all, isn't it?
