It is what it is. (Nothing is ever what is seems, and this should only be used to describe a provable fact. Example: a red bucket IS red to those who can see red. It is what it is even if you are color blind.

Nibby, In that sense, 'like' is called a Discourse Marker. It's in the same group as words such as well, so, look, y'know, oh, then, actually, basically, okay, etc.

People will say, "Well... so look, what should we do?" "Oh I dunno; we're basically, y'know, okay; but, umm, at the end of the day, we still need to do something."

There are 9 discourse markers in those two sentences. People will use them ad infinitum. But as soon as someone uses the word 'like', the critics will lose their minds.

Maybe go back to school and get off your high horse.
