Well, if the car in front is really in a hurry and is driving way above the speed limit, it'd be stupid to speed up to reduce the gap.

Rafa, no. It's been tested multiple times. In fact in a traffic jam if only one person keeps the recommended 2 car lengths distance from the person in front of them at all times it can break up the bottle neck and traffic can start flowing again
They tested it on my the highway into DC, one of the worst traffic jam areas in the country and it worked even there. If someone cuts in front of you, just maintain distance and drop back. We've know this since the early.aughts. people are just too impatient which ends up hurting everyone.
