#15 The people who have the misguided notion that living to be 100+ years old is some kind of amazing thing have never spent any time around anyone that age. My wife's grandmother lived to be 103. She outlived her husband, her son (my wife's dad), her sisters, and all of her old friends and suffered from survivor's guilt. Her health was considered excellent for someone her age, yet she was so fragile the slightest bump could break bones, and the slightest cut took weeks to heal. She could barely walk (and refused to be seen in a wheelchair). Everything hurt all of the time, and she was ashamed of her own appearance. She once told my wife that she wished she would just hurry up and die and that being that old was a nightmare. Advanced aging takes away a thing we humans take for granted and highly value: our dignity, so while it might seem like this marvelous achievement to live that long, it's also no walk in the park. Usually quite literally, because you can't walk anymore. And as painful it is for someone that age, it's also no fun for the people who care for them watching a once vibrant, lively person slowly wilt into a withered, decrepit shadow of their former selves. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
