Micky, climate change, caused by global warming, can cause various extreme weather conditions around the world. So, in some places you may get extreme heat and in others you may get colder than normal temperature cause by the overall global warming.
For instance, global warming causes artic ice caps to melt. This causes colder water to move into normally warm water currents. Which can then lead to areas that are normally temperate becoming cold. Or, areas that are normally dry and arid, becoming wet and cold.
Think of it this way. Take a look at England/Scotland/Ireland. If you compare their longitude to the same area in the Americas, you'll see they line up with northern Canada, yet they are more in line with the temperature of much farther south in the Americas, more like new York or Pennsylvania.
Normally, the North Atlantic Drift brings warm water up from the Gulf of Mexico up around this areas resulting in a warm climate even so far north. But, because of the colder artic water disrupting the drift we can expect to see colder weather phenomenon in this area of the world as the planets overall temperature increases.
That's why scientists and activists have started referring to it as "climate change" rather than "global warming" because too many people aren't able to understand that climate and weather aren't the same thing

Focusing on things like a Q-tip or random garbage like the whale, or the popular scapegoat plastic straws, detracts from the real issue, plastic nets and fishing gear which makes up the vast majority of plastic waste in the ocean.
The Pacific Garbage patch isn't mostly made up of things like water bottles and straws, but is at least 50% fishing nets.
In fact, the push to make plastic straws illegal benefits those same fishing companies more than anyone else. Governments make laws regulating single plastic use and the general public feels like they've accomplished something substantial and then no one looks to close at where the actual plastic pollution is coming from.
It's similar to how plastic bottling companies passed all of the blame on to the consumer when they made local governments enact recycling programs, even though they all are well aware that it is cheaper to manufacturer new plastic than it is to purchase recycled plastic.
So, the bottling companies can pass the responsibility and the blame on the consumer all while not making any changes whatsoever.
Half the stuff we do to "fix" problems really just make things worse.
