Like George Patton said (paraphrased)... "the objective isn't to die for your country, the objective is to make the bastards on the other side die for theirs." It's not heroic to die in war, but to avoid it and win. I would say the US did that pretty well by avoiding the heavy losses, and not charging into the meat grinder.

Its a nice quote, it also means the the US didnt go do the dirties jobs that had to be done. They didnt even want to help, before Pearl Harbor. And if you think they were so clever, and fight only with little mice, you are right. The rest of the world took care of the rest. Ohh.
