Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle was charged with manslaughter when a woman named Virginia Rappe died after the actor allegedly raped her. Rappe was found very ill in Arbuckle's hotel room after drinking bootleg alcohol, which irritated her chronic cystitis. She died of a ruptured bladder. When a friend of Rappe's told police Arbuckle had raped her, police concluded that the weight from the actor's body caused the distress to her organs. Arbuckle went through two highly publicized mistrials before being cleared of all charges at the third trial. Still, his name was sullied, his films largely banned or destroyed, and Arbuckle was effectively shunned in Hollywood for more than a decade.

He responded, “we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.”
