Jeb,
I assume some people would move the pasta to the dish, trying to leave water in the pot. Thus - with this method, dish is not getting dirty by pasta. But the strainer gets dirty ... and I'd recomment at least flushing it with water so no pasta residue stays and dries on that.

Eliminate odors in the microwave with a mixture of 2 cups of water and 2 tablespoons of vinegar, in a bowl and microwaved for 5 minutes. Wipe the inside afterwards with a cloth or paper towel.
