#20: I love all dogs, but Balto took the credit that belonged to Togo. Just to give you an idea: Togo ran 420 km—between heading out to intercept the serum and returning at a forced march pace—while most of the other dogs (including Balto, of course) averaged around 80 km. Balto received all the honors simply because, luckily for him, journalists were waiting at the village to greet the "heroes" when he arrived with the serum after covering roughly 80 km compared to Togo's 430 km. If you're really interested in the story, Leonhard Seppala (Balto's musher) repeatedly expressed bitterness over seeing Balto get all the glory instead of Togo, who had spent his final remaining strength tackling the worst stretch of the journey. Check out the 2019 Disney movie "Togo" (starring Willem Dafoe). It's a Disney movie, but I get goosebumps just thinking about it.
