In a mission called “The Redbull Stratos”, former Austrian military parachutist, Felix Baumgartner, dives from a balloon-lifted capsule 24 miles up in an attempt to break the sound barrier. The operation was a success with Felix setting a few Guinness world records in the process. Here are some of the pictures from this momentous achievement.

A Russian movie involved a scene when a man has to pilot a jet fighter with the canopy open.
The pilot not only performed the stunt but he broke the sound barrier while doing it.

The white halo you can see on the pics is called the Prandtl–Glauert singularity (sometimes referred to as a "vapor cone"). It is the point at which a sudden drop in air pressure occurs, and is generally accepted as the cause of the visible condensation cloud that often surrounds an aircraft traveling at transonic speeds.
