largest Jewish city to flourish and was under muslim (moors) rule. Thanks for leaving that part out , because muslims can not be shown in a good light even if it was in the past.
It was founded by Moors the exiles from Spain in 1471 and was a fortress against the forces of invading Portuguese. After the war it became the largest city of Moriscos and Jewish refugees.
