the metal must have been cooling very quickly, otherwise those workers that got sprayed would have been human torches.

I bet those guys got some nasty burns. Steel does not cool very fast. That maybe the of the worst thing that can happen in a steel foundry. They heated the water-cooled quartz oven to high -> quartz melts. Steel+water = n00bs
