this is not really about peoples' stupidity- it's about the urge to feel important, relevant, to be part of the cool crowd, to be ahead of the curve, envied by others, etc, etc.

none of those things are related to stupidity. on the contrary, all of those things have a known boosting effect on brain chemistry.
