Janis Joplin was arrested in November 1969 in Florida and charged with disorderly conduct after yelling obscenities at police officers during a Tampa concert. Charges were later dropped after it was ruled that the singer's actions were an exercise of free speech.
1971 Larry King: Grand Larceny (Bad Checks)
CNN personality Larry King was arrested in December 1971 in Miami, Florida and charged with grand larceny. King, 38 at the time, was unable to pay back money he owed a financier he was doing some work for. While a judge threw out the larceny charge because the statute of limitations had run out, King pled no contest to one count of passing bad checks.
1972 The Rolling Stones: Assault of a Photographer
ALL of The Rolling Stones were arrested for assault of a photographer and obstruction of police in 1972, and were brought to the Warwick Police Station in Warwick, Rhode Island. They were supposed to land in Boston for a show, but the flight could not land there due to fog. On top of the flight delay, they had the whole scuffle and arrest, which caused even more of a delay for their show...SOOO, The mayor of Boston came to their rescue to avoid a riot at The Boston Garden, where they were scheduled to play. After he stepped in, they were processed quickly and released (to the police, it was better to avoid a riot than to hold the stones).
1976 David Bowie: Grass Possession
On average, nobody looks good in a mug shot, but David Bowie is anything but average. The Thin White Duke was busted in March of 1976 for pot possesion, along with fellow rocker Iggy Pop and two other men.
1978 Sid Vicious: Murder
Sid Vicious, bassist for the Sex Pistols, was arrested by New York police for the October 1978 murder of girlfriend Nancy Spungen. Sid's subsequent drug overdose spared him the indignity of a homicide trial.
1978 Tim Allen: Attempting to Sell Cocaine to a Cop
Actor Tim Allen was arrested in October 1978 while attempting to sell a large amount of cocaine to a Michigan undercover officer. Allen, 25 at the time, served about two years in federal prison following the bust.
1989 Anna Nicole Smith: DUI
Anna Nicole Smith, former Playboy Playmate of the Year and widow of a rickety billionaire, was arrested on a drunk driving rap in Texas in 1989. After getting popped on the misdemeanor DUI charge, Smith posed for the above mug shot snapped by the Houston Police Department.
1994 Johnny Depp: Trashing a Hotel Room
In 1994, Depp was arrested and questioned by police for allegedly causing serious damage to a New York City hotel suite. His excuse was that he was trying to crush a cockroach!
1994 50 Cent: Peddling Heroin and Crack
Rapper 50 Cent (aka Curtis Jackson) was photographed in August 1994 while serving time in a New York State Department of Correctional Services shock incarceration program. 50 Cent, then 19, had pleaded guilty to felony charges of peddling heroin and crack cocaine.
1995 Hugh Grant: Caught Banging A Hooker
Hugh Grant was arrested in June 1995 by Hollywood police who caught him in the act with hooker Divine Brown. The actor pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor lewd conduct charge and was sentenced to two years probation, and ordered to pay a fine.
2001 Vince Vaughn: Fighting in Public
Vince Vaughn was arrested by North Carolina cops in April 2001 and charged with fighting in public for his part in a brawl outside a New Hanover County bar (the movie star was in town working on the film 'Domestic Disturbance'). During the melee, fellow actor Steve Buscemi was stabbed several times. Vaughn entered a no contest plea and the minor charge was dropped six months later.
2001 Marilyn Manson: Grinding on a Security Guard
Brian Hugh Warner (aka Marilyn Manson) was charged with criminal sexual conduct after doing the grind on the head of a security guard during a July 2001 concert in suburban Detroit. The rock star pleaded no contest to a reduced misdemeanor charge, for which he paid a $4000 fine.
2001 Jay-Z: Stabbing a Person
Rap star Jay-Z (real name: Shawn Carter) was arrested by New York City cops in December 1999 for allegedly stabbing a record executive at a Manhattan nightclub. Originally charged with felony assault, the performer pleaded guilty in October 2001 to a reduced misdemeanor count and was sentenced to three years probation.
2002 Steve-O: Stapling His Scrotum to His Thigh (Indecent Exposure)
Jackass star Steve-O (real name: Stephen Glover) was arrested in August of 2002 for one of the more unusual reasons out of anyone on the list. He had allegedy stapled his scrotum to his thigh during a nightclub performance, causing him to be arrested for indecent exposure.
2005 Chris Tucker: Reckless Driving
Comedian Chris Tucker was arrested in April 2005 and charged with reckless driving and fleeing to elude after he did not immediately pull over his speeding 2005 Bentley. Tucker, 33, spent about 30 minutes in a McDuffie County lockup before posting cash bond and being released. According to cops, the 'Rush Hour' star, an Atlanta native, was doing 109 mph on Interstate 20 when clocked by state troopers.
2007 Shia LaBeouf: Refusing to Leave a Walgreens
Shia LaBeouf was arrested in November 2007 after he refused to leave a Chicago Walgreens. The 21-year-old LaBeouf, who appeared to be intoxicated, was popped after he ignored a security guard's demand to leave the drugstore. The actor, pictured above in a Chicago Police Department mug shot, was hit with a misdemeanor criminal trespassing charge.
2010 Snooki: Disorderly Conduct
Snooki (real name: Nicole Polizzi) was arrested in July 2010 for disorderly conduct. The 22-year-old star of the MTV show “Jersey Shore” was booked into a Seaside Heights jail, where she posed for these mug shots.
2012 Darly Hannah: Trespassing and Resisting Arrest
Actress and environmental activist Daryl Hannah was arrested by Texas cops in October 2012 and charged with trespassing and resisting arrest. According to sheriff’s deputies, Hannah attempted to stop the construction of an oil pipeline by lying down in front of an excavator. The 51-year-old star of movies like "Splash," "Wall Street," and "Steel Magnolias" was booked into the Wood County jail, where she posed for the above mug shot before posting $4500 bond.
2013 Oscar Pistorius: Murder
South African sprint runner Oscar Pistorius, a double amputee who competed in the 2013 Olympic games, was arrested on murder charges on February 14, 2013. Pistorius is accused of killing his model-girlfriend, 30-year-old Reeva Steenkamp, in his Pretoria home. Details of exactly what happened were still sketchy, but some reports say that Pistorius claims he shot Steenkamp thinking she was an intruder. Steenkamp died after suffering multiple gunshot wounds.Oscar Pistorius was taken into custody in the early morning hours of February 14, and was expected to remain behind bars until a hearing on February 15, 2013.Was this a tragic case of mistaken identity, or something far more sinister? A police spokeswoman is quoted as saying that there were "previous incidents of a domestic nature" at Oscar Pistorius' home, though she wouldn't elaborate.
