I saw it happen. They made a not-really-huge-but-still-big guy buy a second seat. Then, they tried put a stand-by flier in it because they sell more tickets then they have seats and the stewardess saw any empty seat. The guy told them to get fucked (this was before 9/11)... They made him buy that seat so it was his seat and nobody was going to sit there unless he got a full refund. Nobody sat there.
