The phone itself didn't explode - it was the battery. Cheap batteries (and even some factory batteries - I'm looking at you Sony) have been known to have incredibly small metal shavings in them that cause electrical shorts and battery fires. If the battery is in a confined space, like a cell phone, it can explode.
