Angelina Jolie

“I did almost every type of drug in existence. Those were really dark times for me.“

Incredibly, these words belong to one of the most stunning women on the planet! Angelina Jolie’s biography is full of bitter experiences: she used to suffer from anorexia and depression. However, by the time she got the lead role in the Lara Croft movie, Angie was already ”clean." After starring in this film, the actress became world famous, adopted a child, began her romance with Brad Pitt, and adopted another child. Angelina succeeded in defeating her addiction by surrounding herself with people worth living for.

Robert Downey Jr.

This charismatic young man from a family of actors was always destined for a brilliant future, but Robert failed his first trial by fame and went through a period of wild revelry and substance abuse. Those heady days and nights resulted in scandals, loss of contracts with major studios, and serious problems with the law.

The actor was sentenced to 16 months in prison and compulsory treatment. He spent almost a year in a clinic, after which he firmly decided to stop using drugs. Robert’s friends helped him to get new roles, and the critics reacted favorably to his comeback. Following the well-deserved success of Downey Jr.’s performance in Iron Man, the time came for the actor to start dictating his own contract terms to the Hollywood bosses.

Still, who knows what prestigious movie awards Robert might have won were it not for those years lost to addiction.

Adele

At the beginning of her career, Adele used to worry a lot about how she looked onstage. To gain courage, she started to drink before her shows. Gradually, this habit turned into a real problem.

"Once I got so drunk that, when I had to go onstage, I forgot the words to my own songs. It was the worst night of my life," recalls the performer.

In 2009, Adele decided to kick her habit because hangovers were beginning to affect her voice and cause her to oversleep on concert days. Following ligament surgery, the singer stopped drinking and is now leading a healthy lifestyle.

Anthony Hopkins

“In my youth, I used to think that drinking helps you to relax, to feel free, and, therefore, to be a better actor. Many people in my profession think the same way. They are wrong,“ says Anthony Hopkins.

In 1964, Hopkins got a job at the National Theatre and later that year was dismissed for drunkenness. ”For 15 years, I drank all that I could not bite off,“ admits the actor.

One day, Hopkins woke up at the wheel of his car in a completely unfamiliar place and couldn’t remember how he got there. “When drunk, I used to occasionally fall asleep at the wheel. And I could’ve easily smashed into another car or run over a pedestrian,” says Anthony. After that incident, the actor decided to quit drinking.

”Alcohol almost killed me. If I hadn’t stopped, I would’ve been lying somewhere in Mexico now. At best — in a gutter, at worst — buried under some cactus."

Today, Hopkins is 79 years old, and he has been sober for 41 years — almost half of his life.

Drew Barrymore

Drew became wildly popular at too young an age, and, unnoticed by herself and others, she became an alcohol addict at 13. Slowly but surely, she was making a reverse transformation: from a beautiful swan to an ugly duckling of Hollywood. Countless scandals, tantrums, and overdoses eventually led the actress to an eight-month stint in a rehab clinic.

After leaving the clinic, she wrote poignant and surprisingly adult-sounding memoirs. Subsequently, Drew worked part-time as a waitress and a model, at the same time repaving her road to Hollywood. Today, Barrymore is a sought-after actress, a film studio owner, and a mother of two charming daughters.

On being asked what helped her not to succumb to depression, she invariably answers, "Sometimes, life puts you on your knees. Well, isn’t this an appropriate posture for prayer?!"

Eminem

"Hi, my name is Marshall, and I’m an addict," said the rapper in a documentary. A few years ago, he mixed up his drugs and overdosed. That time, only speedy medical intervention managed to save the performer’s life.

What helped him to eventually climb out of the pit of drug use was the sense of responsibility for his daughter and his two foster daughters. Today Eminem is a model father, with music being his sole addiction.

Kristin Davis

The actress used to suffer from acute stage fright, so she started to drink for courage. Little by little, by the time she was 25, Kristin had turned into a full-blown alcoholic.

Her best friend couldn’t bear seeing her destroy her life and decided to help: she persuaded Kristin to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and yoga courses. It worked. Since then, Kristin didn’t have a single relapse and even wanted to decline the role in Sex and the City when she found out that the script involved her drinking cocktails all the time. “I was afraid of even allowing myself a glass of wine,“ recalls the actress. ”I feel fine without alcohol and don’t want to take any chances."

Daniel Radcliffe

The success of the Harry Potter films prevented the actor from leading a normal life, and he began sinking into depression. During the shooting of the last chapter in the saga, Daniel often appeared on set drunk.

In 2015, Daniel Radcliffe admitted that he used to suffer from alcohol dependence. "When I was drunk, I became a different person. Sometimes I would wake up in the morning in an unfamiliar apartment with no recollection of how I got there. I had constant breakdowns, which led to drinking binges. Then, one day, I went for a walk, which lasted for about five hours. During that time, I never once felt an urge to have a drink. That’s when I realized that I needed to walk in the fresh air and exercise. Nowadays, I do these things every day, and I don’t drink at all."

Samuel L. Jackson

Samuel felt drawn to acting since early youth, so he chose to attend the Faculty of Drama at the Morehouse College in Atlanta. After graduation, he dabbled in film, theatre, and television but without much success: directors simply refused to work with him because of his alcohol and drug problems. In the late 1980s, the actor ended up in a rehab center.

According to Jackson, the most difficult moment in his life was when, while still at rehab, he looked into the eyes of his wife and daughter and said, "Hi, I’m Sam, and I’m a drug addict."

After completing treatment, Samuel went on to star in more than 100 movies, received many prestigious awards, and, most importantly, became an exemplary husband and father.

Kelly Osbourne

Kelly surely inherited the tendency for self-destructive addictions from her great and terrible dad, Ozzy. Add to this psychological problems, and what you get is a young celebrity who consumes dozens of pills every day, sometimes mixing them with other substances. The girl’s dissatisfaction with herself continued to increase as did her weight and her drug doses. During the last rehab treatment, to stop herself from breaking down, Kelly began recording a new album and doing sports.

Nowadays, Kelly looks great. Check out her Instagram to see for yourselves! It can safely be said that a freaky girl has become a modern and confident woman!

Sting

Looking at the singer now, it’s hard to believe that Sting was once a big fan of alcohol and hallucinogenic substances. And yet, at one point in his life, this had indeed been the case. Sting’s constant binges even led to his first wife leaving him, taking their two children with her. Following that, the performer decided to begin a new life. Soon after, his songs took various charts by storm, and his discs went platinum. Today Sting is an exemplary husband and father of six children.

Steven Tyler

“Sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll!“ This used to be young Steven’s lifestyle and credo. Back in those days, there was hardly any popular rocker around wilder than him. But, after 20 years of carousing, Tyler finally managed to get rid of his addictions with the help of his second wife.

The musician himself describes his former attitude this way: ”I used to cause pain to my family, my children, and my friends."

The photo on the left was taken after Steven quit drugs and drinking — the bruises are just the result of an unfortunate fall.

Elton John

Sir Elton John started using drugs in his youth to overcome shyness. Gradually, friends and loved ones turned away from him. Even his mother eventually left the country. Then, in 1975, Elton almost died from an overdose. In 1990, the singer surrendered himself to the doctors and underwent a full rehabilitation treatment course.

Today Elton says of his lost youth, "I’ve spent a huge part of my life for nothing because, thanks to my addiction, I was constantly immersed in myself."

Britney Spears

Britney Spears’s rise to stardom began in early childhood. First it was singing in a choir, then TV show appearances, and finally a solo career. Recording three crazily successful albums in three years, keeping to a tight schedule, earning money and fame — all of this propelled Britney into a violent period of drug taking, alcohol abuse, and family scandals. Being deprived of parental rights to her two sons only exacerbated the situation, breaking the singer’s psyche completely.

It was her father who rescued the singer from the brink by taking full control of her affairs. He severed his daughter’s old ties and won back the legal right for her to see her children. Gradually, surrounded by loved ones, Britney began to recover.

Having nearly lost her children, family, and career, the performer managed to abandon her drug addiction and successfully returned to the world of music.
