I had some screw-in dimmers that would sit between the lamp and the fixture. It sets a bit better mood in the room

I don't get the hygiene part where you don't use the remote control but the trash can and the sink are ok. People aren't aware of all the bacteria resistence. Is more likely you just wash your hands than they wash the bin properly.
Hotel tv remotes get touched by a whole lot of people, and who knows how often that shit gets cleaned. If it grosses you out, use one of the little trash can liners to wrap it up.
