#1 is totally utterly b@#$$%t. By adding the screw you are introducing inaccuracies, not to mention that if you are measuring trimmings or pre-painted material you will ruin it. Yes, it is handy if you need to measure from a crew or nail, but any good tape measure has tiny spikes on the lip that grips when you measure.

The tape measuring hack

For anyone who might not be an expert in doing some handy work, the tape measure has a tiny slit at the front of its hook, and it’s there for a reason. So that you can attach a nail or a screw and measure accurately without it moving around or losing its grip.
