#1 is totally utterly b@#$$%t. By adding the screw you are introducing inaccuracies, not to mention that if you are measuring trimmings or pre-painted material you will ruin it. Yes, it is handy if you need to measure from a crew or nail, but any good tape measure has tiny spikes on the lip that grips when you measure.

The person who started these false "correct ways of doing things" is an absolute d@#$$%s.
Keep extension cords from becoming undone by loosely tying them together.
Extension cables tend to come undone with the slightest pull. To ensure that they stay in-tact and that nothing will be switched off while you are working, tie them into a loose knot. Even if you pull them, the knot will get tighter but it won’t unplug.
