In Austria and Germany, in case of traffic jam cars are obligated to form a “Rettungsgasse” – this allows emergency vehicles to drive through unhindered.

@Child that's not true. The far right lane is mainly for broke down and damaged cars. In Germany, you are in a case of jams legally required to leave space between the right lane and the left lanes, the so called "rettungsgasse". It's forbidden to block this path. Sadly, because of middle aged people in SUVs, they had to raise the fine, because more and more people think there time is more valuable than the life of other people.

The rule in Germany goes like this:

the cars in the most left lane need to hug the left street border, all other lanes (in case of more than two) have to move to the right.

There is even a reminder to remember this rule. Just look at your right hand: The thumb (aka most left lane) to the left, all other fingers (aka all other lanes) to the right. The "space" between thumb and other fingers will be the "Rettungsgasse", which could be translated as "rescue lane".

A rare sight of a working Rettungsgasse in Germany. Seriously, it is actually a law, but is rarely obeyed.

Kind of silly because you block the exits, but who am I to judge...
