Buzludzha Monument

Kazanlak, Bulgaria

This alien-spacecraft-looking building is a monument, erected by the government of Bulgaria, to commemorate a battle between the Bulgarians and Turks in 1868. Built in 1974, it’s an example of the brutalist Soviet architecture that defined the cold war, and was filled with statues of Lenin, Marx and giant red stars.

After the government fell in 1989 and the cold war was effectively ended, the monument was abandoned
