BMW famously started out in 1916 making plane engines under the name Bayerische Flugzeug-Werke, which means Bavarian Plane Manufacturing.

The company changed its name to Bayerische Motoren Werke, translated Bavarian Motor Work, in 1917. The name has since been shortened to BMW.
