Dubbed the "river that ran away from paradise," Caño Cristales is just like any other bubbling brook for most of the year. However, between the wet and dry seasons, a species of plant called Macarenia clavigera blooms beneath the surface of the water, transforming the river from its usual blue hue into a brilliant red, according to Atlas Obscura. Yellow and green sands that are visible beneath the surface add further bursts of color to the river.
