#49 That comes from a tradition of having assets - ie objects which could be sold if difficult financial situations arise. Land; buildings; precious jewels; precious metals, often made into *silverware*; art, such as *fine china*, ie those dishes to which you so eloquently refer; furniture; fine rugs; etc. etc. They were investments hundreds, or thousands, of years before things such as IRA accounts etc.

More simply: antiques, some of which are highly valuable, come in many forms. Antiques are a form of investment.

btw: how are your student loan payments going?

The only purpose of those plates is to show how wealthy you are when your neighbors come over.
Student loans are expensive because you fucked up the economy. But I know, your question was meant to be a joke. We tend to ridicule things we don't understand. It's human nature.

When interest rates dropped super low, every university saw this as a source of endless revenue (because money was basically free to their students in the form of loans), and in order to compete with each other, they all built irresponsibly unnecessary amenities, such as Olympic-sized swimming pools, luxury dorms, massive stadiums, and prestige-professorships, and in turn they escalated their tuition to levels that had never been seen before.

This is the ONLY reason why Backwater State University has a football stadium the size of a major university's, and their tuition is $20,000 per year instead of $2000.
