So they can give the kids the learning experience they need.
They have to be able to survive so they can do their job. Not to mention the vast majority of teachers pay for lots of classroom supplies out of their own pockets because they aren't budgeted enough for what is needed.
Seriously, talk to a teacher sometime before running your mouth off.
If you teach in Canada, not only do you start at 50 grand a year, and end up retiring at 55 at over 100 grand a year, but you get 11 weeks off a year working a 5 hour day ...and then you can come back to supply teach at the top of the grid while still collecting your full pension.
You MUST be talking about American teachers, because if you're referring to Canadian teachers you need to sit the FD and STFU...teaching is one of the most privileged sectors of society where I live.
