It is only people from the USA that spell metre that way.
Metre = 1000 millimetres, 1/1000ths of a kilometre.
Meter = measuring device, like in speedometer or electric meter.

Corey, this is not misspelling. Your dictionary spells many things in ways we find bizarre. Remember, we do not even agree on the makes of the letters on our alphabets. Tire = Tyre and such. I won't ask you to change 200 years of diversion in your language, quit telling me mine is wrong.
