THE CLIFFS OF MOHER

Located in County Clare, this iconic cliffside is one of Ireland’s most popular tourist attractions.

 

In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the scene where Dumbledore and Harry retrieve the locket was filmed at the Cliffs of Moher.

 

In The Princess Bride, the Cliffs of Moher became the Cliffs of Insanity.

 

And in the romantic comedy Leap Year, the sunset proposal scene happens on the iconic Irish cliffside.

KILMAINHAM GAOL

Built in 1796 and decommissioned in 1924, Kilmainham Gaol is one of the largest unoccupied prisons in Europe. Now, the former Irish jail is a museum, a historical monument, and a very popular filming location.

 

Paddington 2 heavily features Kilmainham Gaol as the prison Paddington is sent to for most of the movie.

 

In the iconic caper film, The Italian Job, you can see the prison at the beginning of the movie.

 

In The Name of The Father used Kilmainham Gaol to portray the prison where Gerry Conlon was incarcerated for 15 years.

ALNWICK CASTLE

Alnwick Castle, built in the 11th century, is the seat of the 12th Duke of Northumberland. The castle, and its gardens, are a popular English tourist destination.

 

Potterheads will recognise the castle from the scene where Harry learns to fly a broom in Harry Potter and the Philosophers’ Stone.

 

You can spot the castle in Downton Abbey as the residence of the Marquess of Hexham.

 

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves is set at Nottingham Castle, but was filmed at Alnwick Castle.

TORRENCE HIGH SCHOOL

Torrence High School, located in southern Los Angeles, has been used in several popular TV shows and movies. Productions usually film scenes in the Senior Patio, an outdoor section of this American high school notable for its distinctive arches and palm trees.

 

In She’s All That, you can see the Senior Patio in several scenes.

 

You can spot Torrence High School in Beverly Hills, 90210.

 

In Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Torrence High became Sunnydale High.

Since Torrence High was such a popular filming location for ’90s teen movies, it’s no surprise that Not Another Teen Movie, a movie parodying ’90s teen movies, also filmed at the Senior Patio.

 

VASQUEZ ROCKS

Vasquez Rocks is an American park located in northern Los Angeles. It’s named after the famous 19th century bandit Tiburcio Vásquez, who used the rocks to hide from law enforcement.

 

The iconic geological feature appears in West World.

 

Hail, Caesar! filmed a good portion of the cowboy scenes at Vasquez Rocks.

In the original Star Trek series, Vasquez Rocks becomes an alien planet.

 

BRADBURY BUILDING

This iconic LA building was designed by Summer Hunt for the gold-mining millionaire Lewis L. Bradbury in 1893. This gorgeous American building is well known for its massive skylight, birdcage-style elevators, and wrought iron railings.

 

Bradbury House is used in the final scene of 500 Days of Summer when Tom meets Autumn.

 

You can also spot the Bradbury building as Sebastians’ apartment in Blade Runner. The building is especially visible during Deckard and Roy’s final fight.

In The Artist, the staircase sequence is filmed at Bradbury House.

 

HATFIELD HOUSE

Hatfield House is perhaps most famous for being the place where Queen Elizabeth I spent most of her childhood. Currently, it is owned by Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, but this English mansion is open to the public.

 

The castle serves as the main interior and exterior location in The Favourite.

 

The Jonas Brothers’ music video for “Sucker” was also filmed at Hatfield House.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider 2 filmed in the Hatfield House library (the same library where Rachel Wiesz chucks books at Emma Stone’s head).

 

THE BRITISH INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AEROSPACE

The campus is located near the Vancouver International Airport. Students can learn everything from aircraft maintenance and design to commercial pilot training at this Canadian college.

 

The campus can be seen as the research facility in Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

 

This Means War uses the campus as CIA headquarters.

And in The Cabin in The Woods, the BCIT Aerospace campus becomes the headquarters of a secret government organisation dedicated to preventing the apocalypse through ritual human sacrifice.

 

POINTE DUME STATE BEACH

Located in Malibu, Point Dume State Beach is a convenient filming location for many LA productions. American movies and TV shows often film beach scenes at Point Dume.

 

The desert island from the pilot episode of I Dream of Jeannie was actually just Point Dume State Beach.

 

The dramatic twist ending of Planet of the Apes was shot at Point Dume.

Tony Stark’s mansion in Iron Man was edited onto the onto the Point Dum cliffside.

 

ENNIS HOUSE

The ornamented granite blocks of this LA mansion, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, has inspired filmmakers for decades. This unusual American house, with its distinctive Mayan-inspired architecture, had its break out role in the 1959 horror movie House On Haunted Hill. It’s been consistently used as a film location ever since.

 

The LA mansion was used to portray Thomas Griffin’s Hong Kong penthouse in Rush Hour.

 

In the second season Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Ennis House becomes Angel’s lair.

THE KSAR OF AIT BENHADDOU

Aït Benhaddou is a ksar – or fortified city –located in Morocco. Historically, the village was a midway point on a caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. Several families still live in the ksar, but most local residents live in modern dwellings nearby the historic landmark.

 

The ksar became the city of Yunkai in Game of Thrones.

 

In Gladiator, Aït Benhaddou became the city of Zucchabar, AKA where Maximus is sold as a gladiator.

 

In Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, the Moroccan village is used to portray ancient Persia.

 

MENTMORE TOWERS

Built for the Rothschild family in 1854, Mentmore Towers is located in Buckinghamshire, England. The Jacobethan building is currently unoccupied.

 

In Eyes Wide Shut, the exterior of Mentmore Towers was used to portray the country mansion where Nick stumbles upon a disturbing ritual.

 

You can spot the mansion as Wayne Manor in Batman Begins, the first instalment of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy.

 

And true Spice Girl fans will recognise Mentmore Towers from the iconic “Goodbye” music video.

 

ALABAMA HILLS

Despite their name, the Alabama Hills are actually located in California. They became a popular filming location for Westerns in the ’50s, but you can still spot the hills in more modern movies.

 

Django Unchained uses the Alabama Hills to portray the Texas wilderness.

 

When Tony Stark goes to Afghanistan in Iron Man, he actually just went to the Alabama Hills.

 

You can briefly spot the Alabama Hills in Firefly as Serenity takes off from a border planet.

 

UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO

Established in 1827, the University of Toronto is Canada’s top research university. The campus has appeared in a wide variety of films, usually portraying an American college.

 

In Mean Girls, you can see the University of Toronto in the background after the Mathletes win the state championship.

 

In Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle, the University of Toronto became Princeton.

 

All of the Culver University scenes in The Incredible Hulk were filmed at the University of Toronto.
