I've often wished that their was some required financial means test before having children so that no child would ever be forced to suffer parents who cannot afford them.

Ansel, That's a really broad brush you're using to paint a family's financial situation. I know there's a percentage of people who do enter into having children with blind eyes; however, there are just as many -- if not more of late-- where a parent(s) can be faced with hardships. Anywhere from losing their job, being injured or becoming ill can place a family into quick financial decline with very little resources that are afforded to others who're already in the welfare system simply because it takes time to get those benefits to kick in. Also, many middle income family's don't enter into the welfare programs since they're so very difficult to climb out from, for a myriad of reasons and the parent(s) are hopeful new employment is just around the corner. So don't be so quick to judge when you clearly have no knowledge aside from your cynicism as to the variety of hardships there are that many people are facing.

Life happens buddy. Sometimes tragedy or accidents happen that effect the parents income. It's not always just trash raising kids.

girl_cray this makes me cry so much. I don't have much but still give things I don't use to people in need. No matter how low you fall, their are always people that have it worse. Never forget that!

Lonzo, So true #14 broke my heart she watched every penny for sales and coupons. You make do with what you can. Been there myself. You sound like a kind soul. I hope you have a great day

"My folks always had three meals a day for us but clothes were always a treat.

It might be a pair of pants and a shirt but my folks always made sure it was something that we were able to pick out and it always felt so special. They sacrificed a lot for it.

In fact, my Mom told me a few years ago that in order to provide that my parents didn't buy new clothes (or much of anything) for well over a decade when we were younger.

With my first real job out of school I was able to take my Dad to a shop and have him pick out a suit of his choice and get it fitted. He's confessed that it's one of the moments that's really stuck with him; he still has that suit and has worn it to both my sister's and my weddings.

But yeah, some of those feelings and habits don't really go away. Regarding clothes, they still get worn till they can't be patched anymore and I loathe to throw them away.

I gotta stop there because this is actually making me surprisingly emotional."
